Sustainable Food Production in Greenhouses and its Relations to the Environment

چکیده
Globally, buildings are responsible for approximately 40% of the total world annual energy consumption [1]. Most of this energy is for the provision of lighting, heating, cooling, and air conditioning. Increasing awareness of the environmental impact of CO2 and NOx emissions and CFCs triggered a renewed interest in environmentally friendly cooling, and heating technologies. Under the 1997 Montreal Protocol, governments agreed to phase out chemicals used as refrigerants that have the potential to destroy stratospheric ozone. It was therefore considered desirable to reduce energy consumption and decrease the rate of depletion of world energy reserves and pollution of the environment. Volume 5 Issue 3 2016

Challenges and Opportunities in Tomato Production Chain and Sustainable Standards
Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) is an important member of the Solanaceae family. It is mainly used as food and cash crop globally. Tomato also serves as an ornamental plant in some parts of the world. In urban areas, this crop is included in the foodscaping systems where it is grown in hanging baskets, growing pots and aquaponics for aesthetic and food purposes. Tomato production is m...
متن کاملAn Assessment of Management Indicators in Ornamental Plant Greenhouses
Greenhouse culture plays a significant role in driving the agricultural development process by providing artificial conditions for production and/or neutralizing environmental variables. Obviously, planning for developing this production system requires understanding effective and limiting variables. Accordingly, the present study was conducted in 2018 in order to evaluate management indicators...
متن کاملComparison of energy consumption and greenhouse gas emission footprint caused by agricultural products in greenhouses and open field in Iran
Decisions can be taken to increase energy efficiency and to mitigate the emissions to the environment by examining the energy audit and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions footprint of crop production in different ways and in different regions, with comparable principles. In this study, energy consumption and energy indices of tomatoes production in four regions of Iran including East Azerbaijan...
متن کاملThe role of urban agriculture in increasing agricultural productivity and food security
Today, the world is facing several problems, including population growth, urbanization, food demand increasing, depletion of water resources, and environmental degradation. "Urban agriculture" as part of urban activities is an opportunity to make positive changes in the world food system and produce quality food. Urban agriculture is a new solution to deal with environmental, social, and econom...
متن کاملGMOs: A Good but Battered Means for Sustainable Production Intensification
FAO promotes Sustainable Production Intensification (SPI), which consists of a technology menu for optimizing crop production per unit area, taking into consideration the range of sustainability aspects including potential and/or real social, political, economic and environmental impacts. The author suggests that Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) cropping is not only well aligned to SPI but a...
